What does it mean to have a platform game with multiplayer?
It means you can play online! I don't know if you've been
following me lately but I've been working on a little game called Ghostbusters:
Spirits Unleashed. We just released our Steam Green light campaign last week
and now we're getting ready to release the Multiplayer Beta on July 30th on
Windows and OSX.
I'm super excited about this game; it's my first foray into
developing a PC game and I had a lot of fun making it. Multiplayer is something
that I've wanted to do since I was a kid playing Command & Conquer (it's
hard to believe I wrote that). But it's never really worked out before until
now, not because it's any easier than doing single player, but because it's
always been a huge pain to develop and test. Fortunately, Unity doesn't require
much of anything to make multiplayer work right; you can literally get it
running right away without having to write a line of code. That makes it a lot
simpler than writing a server yourself (like Unreal did) or using some
old-school proprietary tech from back in the day like Xbox Live.
When you start playing Ghosts Unleashed, you'll notice that you
can join games already being played and pick any character you want to play.
You can also invite people to your own games, though you might need to wait
awhile before they show up. Once you're in a game, you can chat, trade items,
and perform actions like buying ammo, healing teammates, etc. There are no
lobbies or matchmaking in this beta version, so you'll need to find friends on
Steam or Twitter to play together. All of the weapons and costumes in the game
are free to use in the multiplayer beta, and we plan to add more items to
unlock later on.
We'll continue adding features over time as well. Right now
there aren't any plans to introduce characters or story elements, but we may
add them down the road.
How many players can you have at once in multiplayer?
At launch, you can only play two-player split screen, but we're
planning on adding four-player local co-op soon after release.
Do you have any tips to keep your multiplayer sessions
interesting?
Here are a few things we think of often when designing the game:
* When selecting weapons, make sure you have different types
available so that each class can fill a unique role. Example: A shotgun is
great for clearing rooms, while a sniper rifle is perfect for taking enemies
out from long range. If you have two shotguns, try pairing them with two
different snipers.
* Make sure to try to balance power levels between classes. As
you level up, you should gain access to stronger attacks and abilities.
* Don't let one person dominate the game by killing everyone
else. Try to spread out the kills by throwing in a couple of weaklings who die
quickly.
* Use crowd control spells wisely, especially on harder
difficulties where they become quite powerful.
* If you happen to be carrying around a lot of ammo, consider
trading those valuable shots for healing potions or healing items. Or even
better, give your healer a buff potion!
